A New Normal

He was only about 1 week old. I was recovering at home in Wayne from the c-section the doctor's determined I needed in order to bring him safely into this world. My body was so sore, tired, swollen not to mention the emotional changes a new mom has. I was more than a little nervous about caring for this new little life that God had blessed us with.

Luckily, we had some extra hands around. My sister-in-law, Shirley, and father-in-law, Domingo, were staying with us and helping us out with laundry, cooking, cleaning...basically whatever we needed.

On this particular morning, I was feeling more like myself. I was able to move around better and, for the first time since I gave birth, I felt strong enough to take a shower, put on make-up, do my hair and basically pull myself together as I was finding my way in this new mommy world. This would be the first day of my new "normal". So, with Shirley & Steve changing Chris and tending to his needs in his room, I went down to the kitchen made myself a bagel and grabbed a tall glass of orange juice. The idea was to take my breakfast back to my bedroom, sit down, relax, watch a little news and just have a few moments to myself. Sounds awesome, right!?!? What new mom wouldn't want that?

So, on my way to my bedroom, I had to pass by Chris' room. I stopped for a mere moment in the doorway where I observed them in the midst of changing his diaper. The next thing I know, pee is flying through the air... literally like an arc of a rainbow... and lands directly first on my beautifully buttered bagel and then in my orange juice. It also splattered my arm. A perfect shot... Shirley told me later that the look on my face was priceless -- I didn't know whether to laugh or cry although I think I was leaning more towards crying. From that moment on I knew what my new "normal" was going to be... a blend of laughing and crying at every precious moment with this little guy.

Oh, it would be ages before I could eat a bagel if that happened! And I remember learning early on to keep Michael "covered" while changing his diaper. It always happened. What is it with boys? Once you take off the diaper they need to go again??? Great story. After Olivia was born I spent the first week going back and forth to the hospital 2 hours each way. Not fun! Enjoy your weekend!
